Lost scripts from Rowan Atkinson’s much acclaimed sitcom Blackadder reveal plans to shoot a biblical series. The anti-hero plays the owner of the inn in Bethlehem where Mary gave birth.
The document contains a rough outline and a few pages of dialogue. The script was described as “a strange cross between Fawlty Towers and Life of Brian.”
It was written in 1988 but rejected as writer Richard Curtis felt it couldn’t live up to the Life of Brian and he also felt it was too controversial.
Instead they produced a spoof of Dickens’s Christmas Carol with Blackadder in the role of scrooge.
The episode scripts were uncovered during the writer’s research for his new book “The True History of the Blackadder: The Unadulterated Tale of the Creation of a Comedy Legend.”
Blackadder was voted as the second best British sitcom of all time. It was narrowly beaten by Only Fools and Horses.
